Traveling with Your Medications
By: Bev & Chris  -  11/11/2008

When I’m deciding what to take with me, I start with what I already have in the house.  It’s best to take what has worked in the past and I know it’s ok to take with my other medications.

If you aren’t sure, check with your pharmacist.  While you are there, take them a complete list of all your medications.  Make sure you list the dosage, and tell them about all of the supplements you are taking.  Ask your pharmacist how they can help you if you lose or run out of medication while you are traveling. You’ll be stressed enough if it happens, but prepared because you know what to do.

Are you going to be crossing 3 or more time zones? Ask how to adjust your medications for travel. Some of the medications are time released.

Some of my OTC (over the counter) medications are in the blister packs.  These make it so easy for travel.  Our Travel Rx Bag has a clear plastic pouch and it’s perfect for all the packaged meds.

Always take your prescribed medications in the original bottle. I put empty bottles in my Travel Rx Bag, when it’s time to go, I just fill the bottles. I take enough for the trip and a few days extra, just in case. I don’t want to be caught without enough migraine medication!

Do you use the Sunday- Saturday daily pill holders? They are great; make sure you fill them when you reach your destination. TSA loves it when your medications are in the original container.

Do you intend on traveling international and take narcotics? Make sure they are in a bottle with your name on it, and get a note from your doctor why you take this medication. The name on the bottle must match your ticket.
Are you traveling with Diabetic supplies? TSA screeners see medications every day, again, meds with your name on them are going to help you zip through the screeners!

Remember if you have liquid medication, this needs to go in your quart size baggie. Liquids are limited to 3 ounces. This includes eye drops, saline and aerosols. If it is more than that it must go in a checked bag. For more TSA information go to www.tsa.gov and click on travelers.
